About the Zulu Prince Daisy Plant
Origin and Characteristics
This stunner hails from southern Africa — a region known for hot, dry summers and poor soil. The Zulu Prince African daisy (Venidium fastuosum) is built for those tough conditions. Its flowers are classic daisy shapes, about 3 to 4 inches across, with white petals, purple and orange rings, and a dark black center. Pretty silvery foliage completes the look. I’ve seen these plants reach about 2 feet tall in my own garden, and they always turn heads.
You might be wondering — why call it “Prince”? Because it truly looks regal. The bold color contrast makes it stand out in any bed or border. Unlike many annuals that fizzle out by midsummer, this one keeps going strong. It laughs at drought and shrugs off poor soil. In fact, overwatering is the fastest way to kill it — I learned that the hard way my first season. If you’ve got a sunny, dry spot where nothing else thrives, give this plant a shot. It’s a real survivor.
Why It’s a Great Choice for Tough Spots
Ever had a corner of your yard where grass refuses to grow and other flowers turn crispy? That’s exactly where the Zulu Prince daisy belongs. It doesn’t just tolerate dry soil — it thrives in it. I’ve planted them along a south-facing wall that bakes in the afternoon sun, and they bloomed nonstop from June through September.
Think about it: most annuals need constant watering and rich soil. Not this one. You can stick it in gravelly ground, sandy patches, or even a rocky slope. The deep taproot finds moisture way down, so you don’t have to babysit it. Plus, the silvery foliage reflects heat, keeping the plant cool. It’s basically the superhero of low-maintenance flowers. If you’re tired of nursing fussy plants, the Zulu Prince African daisy is a game-changer. And it looks gorgeous while saving you time.

Step-by-Step Planting Guide
Start seeds indoors about 6 weeks before your last frost. Sow them 1/8 inch deep in seed-starting mix. Keep the soil barely moist — think damp sponge, not wet rag. Provide bright light once they sprout. You can also buy transplants, which I prefer for instant gratification.
When you move them outside, choose a spot with full sun — at least 6 hours daily. Space plants about 12 inches apart. Don’t amend the soil with compost or fertilizer. I know that sounds weird, but rich soil makes them leggy and reduces blooms. They actually bloom best when they’re a bit stressed. Just dig a hole, pop the plant in, and water it in once. After that, step back. Seriously — the less you fuss, the better. I’ve seen friends kill their Zulu Prince African daisies by coddling them. Trust the plant’s instincts.
Watering and Maintenance Tips
Water only when the soil feels dry an inch down. Overwatering is the #1 mistake people make. In my garden, I water maybe once a week, even during heatwaves. These plants can handle drought better than most of us can handle our morning coffee without it.
Pinch back the growing tips early on to encourage bushiness. Deadhead spent flowers regularly — this keeps new blooms coming. But here’s a trick: leave a few seed heads at the end of the season. Pluck them off, store them in a paper bag, and shake to release seeds. You’ll have free plants next year. I do this every fall and never buy new seeds. Also, watch for aphids — they love the new growth. A strong spray of water knocks them off. No need for harsh chemicals. And if you live in a rainy area, grow them in containers where you can control moisture. Easy peasy.
Dealing with Pests and Diseases
Zulu Prince African daisies are pretty pest-resistant, but slugs and snails might munch on young plants. Use beer traps or crushed eggshells around the base. Aphids show up occasionally — I blast them off with the hose. No big deal.
Diseases are rare if you keep the leaves dry. Powdery mildew can appear in humid conditions — give plants good airflow and avoid overhead watering. In five years of growing these, I’ve only seen mildew once, during a freak rainy summer. I just trimmed affected leaves and the plant bounced back. The key is prevention: don’t crowd them, and water at the soil level. Honestly, compared to roses or tomatoes, this plant is a breeze. It’s almost too easy — you might feel like you’re cheating.

Step-by-Step Planting Guide
“But I’m just trying to keep it hydrated!” I hear this all the time. Overwatering leads to yellow leaves, root rot, and plant collapse. The Zulu Prince African daisy evolved in dry climates — it stores water in its thick stems and roots.
Here’s a comparison to drive the point home. I’ve put together a quick table based on my own experience and what I’ve seen in gardening forums.
| Watering Frequency | Result | Leaf Color | Bloom Count |
|---|---|---|---|
| Once a week (dry soil) | Healthy, compact plant | Silvery green | 30-50 flowers per season |
| Twice a week (moist soil) | Leggy growth, fewer blooms | Pale green | 10-20 flowers |
| Daily (wet soil) | Root rot, plant dies | Yellow/brown | 0 flowers |
Notice how less water actually gives you more flowers? That’s counterintuitive, I know. But it’s true. Let the soil dry completely between waterings. Stick your finger in — if it’s dry, water deeply. If it’s damp, wait. I even let mine wilt slightly before watering. They bounce back within hours. Remember: Zulu Prince daisies are camels, not goldfish.
Wrong Light Conditions
Another big mistake? Planting them in partial shade. These flowers need full, direct sun. Too much shade makes them stretch toward the light, get floppy, and produce hardly any blooms. You’ll end up with a sad, sparse plant.
I’ve seen people tuck them under a tree thinking they’re “protecting” them from harsh sun. Big mistake. Zulu Prince African daisies bask in heat like a lizard on a rock. Give them at least 6 hours of direct sun daily. South or west-facing spots are ideal. If you’re in a super hot climate (like Arizona), a little afternoon shade is okay, but morning sun is still a must. In my garden, I have a spot that gets full sun from 10am to 6pm — they bloom like crazy. Move them to partial shade and you’ll get 80% fewer flowers. Trust me on this.
Ignoring Deadheading
You might be thinking — “Do I really have to deadhead? Can’t I just let nature take its course?” Well, you can, but you’ll miss out on months of extra blooms. Deadheading tells the plant to keep producing flowers instead of setting seeds.
It takes two seconds: just pinch off the faded flower head where it meets the stem. Do this weekly during the blooming season. I do it while sipping my morning coffee — it’s meditative. If you skip deadheading, the plant will stop blooming by mid-summer. It’ll focus on making seeds and then go dormant. One simple habit gives you flowers from June until frost. That’s a huge payoff for minimal effort. Plus, the plant looks tidier. No one wants a sad, brown mess in their garden. So grab your pruners and get snipping.

Step-by-Step Planting Guide
Living in a rainy climate? No problem. Grow your Zulu Prince African daisy in a pot. Use a well-draining cactus mix or add perlite to regular potting soil. Place the container where it gets full sun and won’t sit in water. You can even move it under a porch roof during downpours.
Indoors, give them a sunny south-facing window. They’ll bloom indoors if you keep them warm and dry. I’ve had a pot on my kitchen windowsill for two winters now — it’s my happy little reminder of summer. Just watch out for spider mites in dry indoor air; misting the foliage helps. Containers also let you control the soil quality. Mix in some sand to improve drainage. The biggest risk is overwatering, so use a terracotta pot that wicks away moisture. Honestly, growing these in containers is almost easier than in ground — you have total control.
Companion Planting Ideas
Pair Zulu Prince daisies with other sun-loving, drought-tolerant plants. Good companions include lavender, rosemary, sedum, and yarrow. They share similar water needs and create a beautiful, low-maintenance tapestry of colors and textures.
I’ve planted them alongside purple coneflower and black-eyed Susans — the white and purple rings of the Zulu Prince pop against the yellow and orange. Avoid planting them next to thirsty plants like hydrangeas or ferns; you’ll end up overwatering one or underwatering the other. Stick to a “dry garden” theme. Add some ornamental grasses for movement, and you’ve got a stunning display that needs almost no care. It’s perfect for busy people or anyone who wants a beautiful yard without a full-time job.
Using as Cut Flowers
Zulu Prince daisies make fantastic cut flowers. Their stems are sturdy, and the blooms last about a week in a vase. Cut them early in the morning when the flowers are fully open. Strip the lower leaves and put them in clean water immediately.
Change the water every two days to keep them fresh. I love mixing them with white dahlias or purple salvia for a striking bouquet. One tip: sear the cut ends with a flame for a few seconds before putting them in water — it extends vase life by a couple of days. These flowers are so dramatic that a single stem in a bud vase makes a statement. I often bring a few inside to brighten my kitchen. And they’re a hit at dinner parties — everyone asks, “Where did you get those?” It’s my little secret.
How to Propagate Zulu Prince Daisies from Seed
Collecting and Storing Seeds
At the end of the season, let a few flowers go to seed. The seed head will turn brown and fluffy. Pluck it off and drop it into a paper bag — not plastic, because moisture causes mold. Shake the bag to loosen the seeds. Store in a cool, dark place.
I label my bags with the year and variety. Seeds stay viable for about 2-3 years if stored properly. You don’t need to buy new plants every spring. Just collect your own. It’s satisfying and saves money. One plant can produce hundreds of seeds — enough to share with friends. I’ve been growing the same genetic line for five years now. The only catch: if you have multiple varieties nearby, they might cross-pollinate. But honestly, that can produce cool new colors. So don’t sweat it.
Starting Seeds Indoors
Six weeks before your last frost date, fill seed trays with a light, well-draining mix. Sow seeds 1/8 inch deep and barely cover them. Water gently from below. Keep the tray in a warm spot (70°F) with bright light. Germination takes 7-14 days.
Once seedlings have two sets of true leaves, harden them off by putting them outside for a few hours each day. After a week, transplant them into the garden or containers. Don’t pamper them — they’re tough from day one. I’ve even direct-sown seeds in late spring when the soil warmed up, and they did just fine. But starting indoors gives you a head start on blooms. Either way, you’ll have a garden full of regal flowers with minimal effort. That’s the Zulu Prince way.

FAQs
Q: Why are my Zulu Prince African daisy leaves turning yellow?
A: Yellow leaves on your Zulu Prince African daisy usually scream one thing — overwatering. I see this mistake all the time, and I made it myself during my first season. These plants evolved in southern Africa’s dry climate, so they store water in their stems and roots. When you water too often, the roots suffocate and rot, which turns leaves yellow or brown. Check your soil moisture by sticking your finger an inch down. If it feels damp, hold off on watering. Let the soil dry completely between waterings — even let the plant wilt slightly before you give it a drink. They bounce back fast. Another possible cause is poor drainage. If you’re growing in heavy clay or a pot without holes, fix that first. Also, too much shade can cause yellowing, but overwatering is the usual culprit. I’ve saved dozens of plants by simply backing off on the watering can. Trust the plant’s instincts — it’s tougher than you think.
Q: Can I grow Zulu Prince daisies in partial shade?
A: I strongly advise against it. Zulu Prince African daisies need full, direct sun — at least 6 hours daily. I’ve tested this in my own garden: plants in full sun bloomed nonstop from June through September, while those in partial shade got leggy, floppy, and produced maybe 80% fewer flowers. These plants bask in heat like a lizard on a rock. Too much shade makes them stretch toward the light, which weakens the stems and reduces blooms dramatically. If you only have a partly shady spot, try a container that you can move around to catch the sun. South or west-facing locations are ideal. Even in scorching climates like Arizona, morning sun is a must. Remember: the Zulu Prince daisy is a sun worshipper. Give it what it wants, and it’ll reward you with a regal display. Skimp on light, and you’ll end up with a sad, sparse plant that barely flowers. Trust me on this one.
Q: How often should I water my Zulu Prince African daisy?
A: The short answer: water only when the soil feels dry an inch down. In my garden, that’s about once a week, even during heatwaves. These plants can handle drought better than most flowers — they’re camels, not goldfish. I’ve let mine wilt slightly before watering, and they bounce back within hours. Overwatering is the #1 killer, leading to root rot, yellow leaves, and plant collapse. I learned this the hard way my first season. Here’s a practical tip: stick your finger into the soil. If it’s damp, wait. If it’s dry, water deeply at the base — avoid getting the leaves wet to prevent mildew. If you’re growing in a pot, use a terracotta container that wicks away moisture and always ensure drainage holes. The key is to mimic their native habitat: dry, hot, and lean. Less water actually gives you more flowers. Counterintuitive, I know, but it’s true. So step back and let the soil dry out. Your Zulu Prince daisy will thank you with a spectacular bloom show.
Q: Do I need to deadhead Zulu Prince daisies?
A: Absolutely — deadheading is the secret to a long blooming season. I know it sounds like an extra chore, but it takes just two seconds per flower. Pinch off the faded flower head where it meets the stem. I do this while sipping my morning coffee — it’s almost meditative. If you skip deadheading, the plant will stop blooming by mid-summer and focus on setting seeds instead. That’s a huge missed opportunity. By removing spent flowers, you trick the plant into producing more blooms to attract pollinators. In my garden, regular deadheading gives me flowers from June until the first frost — that’s months of continuous color. Plus, the plant looks tidier and healthier. One habit, minimal effort, huge payoff. If you’re forgetful, just set a weekly reminder on your phone. You’ll be amazed at the difference. Trust me: a few minutes of snipping is worth every second of those stunning blooms.
Q: Can Zulu Prince daisies grow in containers or indoors?
A: Yes, and it’s actually easier than growing them in the ground in some cases. I’ve grown Zulu Prince African daisies in pots on my kitchen windowsill for two winters now — they’re my happy little reminder of summer. Use a well-draining mix like cactus soil, or add perlite to regular potting soil. Terracotta pots work best because they wick away excess moisture. Place the container in a spot with full sun — a south-facing window is ideal indoors. Water sparingly, letting the soil dry completely between waterings. The biggest risk indoors is spider mites in dry air; a light misting helps. If you live in a rainy climate, containers let you move plants under cover during downpours. I even move my pots around to catch the best sun. One warning: don’t use a saucer that holds water — that’s a recipe for root rot. With a little care, you’ll enjoy these regal blooms both outdoors and inside. They’re perfect for apartments or small spaces.
