If flowers aren't your thing but you want some interest in your plant collection, try a Maranta or Calathea — but don't make the mistake of thinking they're the same plant. I've lost count of how many times I've seen these two lumped together under the prayer plant label, and honestly, it drives me a little crazy. The short answer is no: Calathea and Maranta are not the same, even though they come from the same botanical family, Marantaceae. Only Maranta is a true prayer plant, folding its leaves upright at night like tiny hands in prayer. Calathea moves too, but it's a subtler lift — not that dramatic fold you see in videos. If you've ever bought a so-called prayer plant only to find it doesn't perform the nightly ritual, you probably ended up with a Calathea. I've been there myself, and it's frustrating when you're trying to learn. So before you pick one, let me break down the key differences so you know exactly what you're bringing home — and how to keep it happy.

Are Calathea and Maranta the Same?
The Family Tree Mix-Up
Let me clear up a big misunderstanding right away — Calathea and Maranta are not the same plant, even though they come from the same botanical family, Marantaceae. Think of them like cousins who share a last name but have completely different personalities. I've talked to so many plant owners who assume they're interchangeable, and honestly, I get the confusion. Both are tropical understory plants with stunning foliage, and both thrive in similar conditions. But here's the deal: Maranta is the true "prayer plant," while Calathea is not — no matter what that tag at the nursery says.
When you dig deeper, the differences become obvious. Maranta plants tend to stay low and spread out, with leaves that fold up at night like hands in prayer — that's where the nickname comes from. Calathea leaves also move, but they raise and lower more subtly, and the leaf shapes vary wildly. I've seen Calathea with round leaves, long lance-shaped ones, and even leaves that look pleated like an accordion. Maranta leaves are almost always oval, with clear vein patterns that look hand-painted. If you're trying to figure out which one you own, start by looking at the leaf shape — that's your first clue, and it rarely steers you wrong.
The Prayer Plant Problem
Why does everyone call them prayer plants if it's not true? I'll tell you — it's lazy labeling from the plant industry. Both genera move their leaves in response to light, a phenomenon called nyctinasty. Maranta folds its leaves upright at night, looking like tiny hands praying. Calathea lifts its leaves but doesn't fold them the same way. So if you hear someone say "prayer plant" for a Calathea, gently correct them — only Maranta is the true prayer plant.
Here's a real-world example from my own collection. I bought a "prayer plant" labeled as Calathea at a big-box store, brought it home, and within a week I noticed the leaves weren't folding at night. I thought I was doing something wrong — under-watering, over-watering, bad vibes. Turns out, it was never a prayer plant to begin with. That experience taught me to check the genus before trusting common names. Common names cause so much confusion, especially with tropical plants. If you're shopping online or in stores, always look for the scientific name. A tag that says "Maranta leuconeura" means you're getting a true prayer plant. "Calathea orbifolia" means you're getting something different, even if it looks similar at first glance.

Visual Clues That Tell the Story
You don't need a botanist to tell these two apart — just look at the leaves. Maranta leaves are almost always oval and broad, with distinct veins that create a fishbone pattern. Calathea leaves come in more shapes than I can count: round, oval, lance-shaped, even elongated. The patterns on Calathea look like someone painted them with a fine brush — stripes, spots, and even feathered edges. Maranta patterns are bolder, with clear ribs that contrast against the leaf surface. If the veins look like they're glowing, you're probably looking at a Maranta.
Let me break down a quick comparison so you can check your plant in under a minute. Maranta leuconeura, the classic red-veined prayer plant, has deep green leaves with bright red veins running down the center and out to the edges. The leaves are oval, about 3 to 5 inches long, and they fold up at night. Calathea varieties like the rattlesnake plant (Calathea lancifolia) have long, wavy-edged leaves with dark green spots and purple undersides. Another popular one, Calathea orbifolia, has huge round leaves with pale green stripes. If your plant has round leaves bigger than your hand, it's almost certainly a Calathea. Maranta never gets that big or that round. Here's a table to make it crystal clear:
| Feature | Maranta (True Prayer Plant) | Calathea (Not a Prayer Plant) |
|---|---|---|
| Leaf Shape | Oval, broad, about 3–5 inches | Round, oval, lance-shaped, up to 12 inches |
| Night Movement | Folds leaves upright like praying hands | Lifts leaves slightly, no folding |
| Pattern Type | Bold veins, fishbone or rib pattern | Painted-on stripes, spots, feathered edges |
| Growth Habit | Low, spreading, trailing stems | Upright, shrubbier, clumping form |
| Temperature Tolerance | Can handle down to about 60°F (15°C) | Struggles below 60°F (16°C), prefers warmer |
Growth Habits You Can Spot
Maranta grows like a ground cover, sending out long stems that trail over the pot's edge. That's why you see them so often in hanging baskets. Calathea grows upright, forming a clump of leaves that stand tall. If your plant is spilling over the sides, it's Maranta. If it's reaching for the ceiling, it's Calathea. I've killed a few Maranta by treating them like upright plants, so learn from my mistakes — give them space to spread.
Think about where these plants come from in nature. Both are native to tropical regions of the Americas, from Brazil to Central America. In the wild, Maranta creeps along the forest floor, using its trailing stems to find patches of light. Calathea stands upright, competing for light in the understory. This difference in growth habit affects everything from pot choice to watering frequency. Maranta benefits from wider, shallower pots that let its stems roam. Calathea prefers deeper pots that accommodate its root system. I've repotted both, and trust me — the root structure is noticeably different. Maranta roots are more fibrous and spread out horizontally. Calathea roots go deeper and form a denser clump. If you're repotting, don't use the same approach for both. Give Maranta room to spread, and Calathea room to dig deep.
How Do Their Leaves Close Differently?
The Nighttime Ritual
You've probably seen videos of prayer plants moving at night — it's mesmerizing. But here's what most people miss: Maranta and Calathea move differently. Maranta folds its leaves upward until they're nearly vertical, touching each other like hands in prayer. Calathea raises its leaves but doesn't fold them; they just angle upward, sometimes exposing the purple undersides. If your plant looks like it's clapping at night, it's Maranta. If it looks like it's stretching, it's Calathea.
Why do they move at all? It's all about light and moisture. Nyctinasty is the plant's way of responding to the day-night cycle. By folding or raising leaves, the plant reduces water loss at night and protects the delicate leaf surfaces. Maranta's folding motion is more dramatic and obvious, which is why it earned the "prayer plant" nickname. Calathea's movement is subtler — you might not notice it unless you're paying close attention. I actually set up a time-lapse video once to see the difference, and it was eye-opening. Maranta goes from flat to folded in about 30 minutes after sunset. Calathea takes longer, and the leaves only move about 30 degrees instead of 90. If you want a plant that puts on a show every evening, go with Maranta. If you prefer something more understated, Calathea fits the bill.

Visual Clues That Tell the Story
If your Maranta stops folding at night, something's wrong. The most common culprit is too much light. Maranta is sensitive to direct sun, which can damage the leaves and disrupt the movement cycle. Calathea also responds to light stress, but it shows up as leaf curling or browning edges instead of stopping movement. I once moved a Maranta near a bright window, thinking it would love the light, and within a week the leaves stopped folding. I moved it back to a shadier spot, and within three days it was back to its nightly routine.
Other factors include underwatering, low humidity, and temperature stress. Maranta is more forgiving of temperature drops — it can handle down to about 60°F without major issues. Calathea is pickier and will show signs of distress if temperatures drop below 60°F, with leaves curling or developing brown tips. Humidity is critical for both, but Calathea suffers faster in dry air. If your plant stops moving at night, check these three things first: light exposure, soil moisture, and humidity levels. I keep a hygrometer near my plants now because guessing never works. When humidity drops below 50%, both Maranta and Calathea start complaining — but Calathea throws a bigger tantrum. If you're in a dry climate, group your plants together or use a pebble tray. It's not rocket science, but it makes a huge difference.
Care for Calathea and Maranta
Light, Water, and That Tricky Humidity
Both plants want the same thing: bright, indirect light and consistent moisture. But here's the twist — Maranta is slightly more forgiving. It tolerates lower light levels and won't punish you as harshly if you forget a watering. Calathea is the diva of the two, demanding perfect conditions or it'll throw a fit with brown edges and curling leaves. I tell new plant owners to start with Maranta first, then graduate to Calathea once they've got the basics down.
Let's talk about water quality because this is where most people mess up. Both plants are sensitive to chemicals in tap water, especially chlorine and fluoride. Calathea is notoriously dramatic about this — give it tap water and you'll see brown leaf tips within a week. Maranta tolerates it better but still prefers filtered or distilled water. I fill my watering can the night before and let it sit out, which helps chlorine evaporate. For Calathea, I use distilled water exclusively now after losing a beautiful Calathea ornata to tap water damage. The difference in leaf condition was night and day — within two waterings with distilled water, the new leaves came in clean and healthy. If you're on a budget, a simple countertop water filter works fine. Just don't use softened water, because the salt content will kill your plants slowly. Rainwater is even better if you can collect it, and it's free.
Common Mistakes That Kill Them
Overwatering is the number one killer, and I've done it myself. Both Maranta and Calathea like moist soil, but they hate sitting in water. Use a pot with drainage holes and check the soil before watering. Stick your finger about an inch deep — if it feels dry, water. If it's still damp, wait. Calathea is more sensitive to root rot, so err on the side of underwatering if you're unsure. Maranta can bounce back from a missed watering, but Calathea won't forgive you for soggy roots.
Another mistake is using the wrong potting mix. These plants need a well-draining mix that holds moisture without becoming waterlogged. I mix standard potting soil with perlite and orchid bark in equal parts. This gives the roots enough air circulation while retaining the moisture they crave. Never use garden soil or heavy mixes — they'll compact and suffocate the roots. I also add a handful of worm castings for nutrients, but that's optional. The key is balance: you want the soil to feel like a wrung-out sponge, not a wet towel. If you see yellowing leaves, check the soil moisture first. If it's soggy, you're overwatering. If it's bone dry, you're underwatering. Both problems show similar symptoms, so don't guess — check with your finger or a moisture meter. I use a cheap moisture meter from Amazon, and it's saved me from killing at least three Calatheas.

Visual Clues That Tell the Story
Spider mites love Calathea, and I mean they really love them. Maranta gets them too, but Calathea seems to attract them more. The first sign is tiny webs on the undersides of leaves, followed by stippling or yellow spots. If you catch it early, wipe the leaves with a damp cloth and treat with neem oil. I've also used alcohol wipes for spot treatment, and they work well for small infestations. For larger problems, horticultural oil sprays are effective — just follow the instructions on the label.
Mealybugs and scale are less common but still show up, especially if you bring new plants home without quarantining them first. Always quarantine new plants for at least two weeks before putting them near your collection. I learned this the hard way after a new Calathea introduced spider mites to my entire shelf. It took me months to get rid of them, and I lost two plants in the process. Now I keep new arrivals in a separate room and inspect them every few days. Prevention is way easier than treatment. Keep your plants healthy, because stressed plants attract pests more often. Wipe the leaves monthly with a damp cloth to remove dust and spot any early signs of trouble. If you see something suspicious, isolate the plant immediately and treat it before it spreads. Trust me, the effort is worth it.
Repotting and Propagation Tips
When and How to Repot
You'll need to repot Maranta more often because it spreads faster. Maranta outgrows its pot within a year, while Calathea can stay in the same pot for two years or more. I repot Maranta in spring when I see roots coming out of the drainage holes. For Calathea, I wait until the plant looks root-bound or the soil starts drying out too fast. I use a pot that's one size larger, never more — going too big leads to waterlogged soil and root rot.
The process is straightforward for both. Gently remove the plant from its pot, loosen the roots, and place it in fresh potting mix. Water thoroughly after repotting, but don't fertilize for at least a month to avoid shocking the roots. I've found that Maranta recovers faster from repotting — it shows new growth within a week or two. Calathea can sulk for a month, dropping leaves and looking miserable. Don't panic; it's normal. Just keep the humidity up and the light consistent, and it'll bounce back. If you're repotting a Calathea in winter, wait until spring if you can. Winter repotting stresses them more, and they're already dealing with shorter days and lower humidity. Patience is your friend here.
Propagating Both Plants
Maranta is easy to propagate — just take a stem cutting with at least two nodes and root it in water. Calathea is harder because it grows from rhizomes, so you need to divide the root ball. I've propagated Maranta dozens of times with a 90% success rate. Calathea division works about 60% of the time for me, and only if I'm careful not to damage the roots. If you're new to propagation, start with Maranta.
Here's my process for Maranta: cut a stem below a node, remove the lower leaves, and place it in a glass of water. Change the water every few days, and you'll see roots in two to three weeks. Once the roots are about two inches long, pot it in a small container with well-draining soil. For Calathea, I wait until the plant is big enough to have multiple stems. I take the whole plant out of its pot, gently separate the root ball into sections with at least two stems each, and repot each section. Keep the divisions in a humid environment for a week, like a plastic bag or a propagation box. Calathea divisions need higher humidity to recover from the shock. I've lost a few divisions to low humidity, so don't skip this step. If you don't have a propagation box, a clear plastic bag with a few holes works perfectly. Just make sure the leaves don't touch the plastic, or they'll rot.
Final Tips for Happy Plants
Realistic Expectations for Beginners
You will kill a Calathea. I'm not trying to be harsh — it's practically a rite of passage. Even experienced plant owners lose Calatheas, and it's not your fault. They're finicky, they're sensitive, and they'll let you know when they're unhappy. Maranta is much more forgiving, so start there. If you can keep a Maranta alive for six months, you're ready for a Calathea. I tell my friends: "Maranta is your training wheels plant."
The biggest lesson I've learned is to leave them alone once they're established. Both plants hate being moved, repotted, or fussed over constantly. Find a spot with consistent light and temperature, water when the soil dries slightly, and resist the urge to check on them every day. I used to move my Calathea around, chasing the "perfect" light, and it never got happy until I stopped. Pick a spot and commit to it. If the leaves start looking unhappy, make one change at a time and wait a week before adjusting anything else. Sudden changes stress them out more than imperfect conditions. And don't fertilize too often — once a month during spring and summer is plenty. In winter, don't fertilize at all. They're resting, and they don't need the extra nutrients.
Why They're Worth the Effort
Let me be honest with you — despite all the drama, I absolutely love both plants. Calathea and Maranta bring a tropical feel to any room, and their leaves are living art. No two leaves are exactly alike, and the colors change depending on the light. Maranta's red veins practically glow in low light, and Calathea's patterns look painted by hand. Every time I look at mine, I'm reminded that nature is way more creative than I'll ever be.
If you're feeling frustrated with a struggling plant, take a step back and check the basics: light, water, humidity, and pests. Nine times out of ten, it's one of those four things. Don't give up after one failure, because every plant owner has killed a Calathea or two. I've lost at least three myself, and I still consider myself a competent plant parent. The key is to learn from each loss and adjust your care routine. Try a different variety next time — some Calatheas, like Calathea lancifolia (rattlesnake plant), are more forgiving than others. Keep a plant journal if it helps, noting what works and what doesn't. And remember: plants want to live. They're not trying to spite you. With the right conditions, both Maranta and Calathea will reward you with years of stunning foliage. That payoff makes all the fuss worth it.
Beyond the Basics: What Most Guides Miss
The Humidity Game Changer
You can water perfectly and still kill a Calathea. I learned this the hard way when my first Calathea ornata looked perfect for two months, then developed crispy brown edges overnight. The culprit wasn't water — it was my apartment's dry air. Both plants crave humidity above 60%, but Calathea will throw a visible tantrum if it drops below 50%.
Here's what I wish someone had told me sooner: you don't need a fancy humidifier to make them happy. I've tested three approaches in my own home, and the results surprised me. A pebble tray raised humidity by about 10-15% around the plant, but only within a few inches. Grouping plants together created a microclimate that boosted humidity by roughly 20-30% across the whole shelf. A small cool-mist humidifier set to medium gave me a consistent 65-70% humidity in a 10x10 room. Grouping plants and using a pebble tray together works almost as well as a humidifier for about 90% less money. I keep a cheap hygrometer near my collection — the $10 ones from Amazon work fine — and I check it every morning. If it dips below 55%, I mist the leaves lightly or move the plants closer together. You'd be amazed how much difference three inches of spacing makes.
The Water Quality Trap
Tap water is quietly killing your prayer plants. I know this because I lost three Calatheas before figuring it out. The brown tips and yellow edges I thought were underwatering turned out to be fluoride and chlorine burn. Maranta tolerates tap water better than Calathea, but both prefer filtered or distilled water in my experience.
Let me break down what actually works based on my trial and error. Letting tap water sit out overnight removes about 50-70% of chlorine but does nothing for fluoride or heavy metals. A basic countertop filter pitcher removes most chlorine and some fluoride — about 60-80% depending on the brand. Distilled water eliminates everything, but it costs money and creates plastic waste if you buy it in bottles. I use a simple charcoal filter pitcher now and it solved 90% of my leaf problems. The remaining 10% was fixed by switching to distilled water during winter when my plants were already stressed. If you're on a budget, collect rainwater — it's free, it's perfect for plants, and your Calathea will thank you with glossy, flawless leaves. I set out a clean bucket during rainstorms and store the water in old milk jugs. It lasts for weeks if you keep it in a cool, dark place.
Why Do People Get These Plants Mixed Up?
The Nursery Label Problem
You'd think plant nurseries would get it right, but they don't. I've walked into three different big-box stores and found Calathea labeled as "Prayer Plant" every single time. It's not malicious — it's just sloppy labeling from suppliers who prioritize selling over accuracy. Common names create chaos, and the plant industry leans into it because "Prayer Plant" sells better than "Calathea Lancifolia."
Here's a real scenario that happens all the time: you buy a beautiful plant labeled "Prayer Plant - Assorted Varieties." You bring it home, care for it like a Maranta, and wonder why the leaves aren't folding at night. You check online forums, see conflicting advice, and start second-guessing everything. I've been there, and it's frustrating. The solution is simple: ignore the common name entirely. Look for the scientific name on the tag or pot. If it says "Maranta leuconeura," you have a true prayer plant. If it says "Calathea" anything, you don't. I now take a photo of the tag before buying, then cross-reference it with a plant identification app when I get home. It takes 30 seconds and saves weeks of confusion.
The "Cousin" Comparison Nobody Talks About
So if they're not the same, how close are they really? Think of it this way: Maranta and Calathea are like first cousins in the plant world. They share a grandmother — the Marantaceae family — but their direct parents are different. Maranta is the genus Maranta, and Calathea is the genus Calathea (though some have been reclassified as Goeppertia, which is a whole other rabbit hole). They're close enough to need similar care, but different enough to respond differently to mistakes.
What does this mean for you as a plant owner? It means you can use the same general care approach for both, but you need to adjust your expectations. Maranta is the easygoing cousin who shows up to family gatherings with a smile. Calathea is the dramatic one who needs everything just right or they'll leave early. I treat my Maranta like a friendly roommate and my Calathea like a VIP guest. The Maranta gets tap water occasionally, lower humidity, and a missed watering now and then. The Calathea gets filtered water, a humidifier nearby, and a strict watering schedule. They're both alive and thriving, but the level of attention is completely different. If you're the type of person who wants a low-maintenance plant that still looks stunning, go with Maranta. If you enjoy the challenge of perfecting a care routine and don't mind a little drama, Calathea will keep you on your toes.
How to Pick the Right One for Your Home
Match the Plant to Your Personality
Let's be honest — not everyone has the patience for a Calathea. I've watched friends buy them on impulse, struggle for three months, and then give up on houseplants entirely. That's a shame, because Maranta would have been perfect for them. So ask yourself: do you want a plant that rewards consistency, or one that forgives forgetfulness?
Here's a quick self-assessment I give to everyone who asks. If you check your plants daily, enjoy troubleshooting, and don't mind a little imperfection, Calathea might be your match. If you want something that looks beautiful with minimal effort, or if you travel occasionally and miss waterings, go with Maranta. I've owned both for years, and I can tell you this: my Maranta survived a two-week vacation with just a self-watering spike, while my Calathea needed a friend to come over and check on it. Maranta is the plant for busy people, and Calathea is for dedicated plant enthusiasts. Neither is better — they just suit different lifestyles. I keep both because I enjoy the variety, but if I could only have one, I'd pick Maranta for its resilience and nightly show.
Space Considerations That Matter
Maranta spreads, Calathea stands tall. This simple difference affects where you put them in your home. I have a Maranta in a hanging basket in my bathroom, and its trailing stems have grown three feet long over two years. My Calathea lancifolia sits on a plant stand in the living room, and it's never needed more than a 10-inch pot. Think about your available space before choosing.
Let me paint you a picture. In my kitchen, I have a shelf that gets bright indirect light for about four hours a day. A Maranta would trail over the edge and block the cabinet below within six months. So I put a Calathea orbifolia there instead — it stays compact, grows upright, and the round leaves catch the light beautifully. In my bedroom, I have a corner with a bookshelf that has an empty spot on top. A Maranta in a small pot fits perfectly, and its trailing stems create a nice cascade effect. The key is matching the growth habit to the location. If you have shelves or tall furniture, Calathea works well. If you have hanging baskets or tabletop spaces where trailing plants can shine, Maranta is your pick. I've also seen people combine both in the same room — a Calathea as the centerpiece and a Maranta trailing from a nearby shelf. The contrast in leaf shapes and growth habits creates a dynamic, layered look that's hard to beat.
What About Repotting and Soil?
The Perfect Potting Mix Recipe
I've tested five different soil combinations, and one stands out. Mix one part potting soil, one part perlite, and one part orchid bark. This gives you the drainage they need without drying out too fast. Straight potting soil is too dense, and it'll lead to root rot within weeks. I learned this when I killed my first Maranta by using standard garden soil.
Here's the breakdown of why this mix works. The potting soil holds moisture and provides nutrients. The perlite creates air pockets that let oxygen reach the roots. The orchid bark adds structure and prevents the soil from compacting over time. I add a handful of worm castings for slow-release nutrients, but that's optional. If you're in a dry climate, increase the potting soil slightly to retain more moisture. If you're in a humid climate, add more perlite and bark for extra drainage. I adjust my mix seasonally — more bark in winter when the soil stays wet longer, more soil in summer when it dries out faster. This might sound like overkill, but it makes a noticeable difference in leaf health. The roots stay happy, and happy roots mean happy leaves.
When to Repot and What to Watch For
Don't repot on a schedule — repot when the plant tells you. For Maranta, I repot when I see roots coming out of the drainage holes or when the soil dries out within a day of watering. For Calathea, I repot when the plant starts looking top-heavy or when the leaves are smaller than usual. Repotting too often stresses them out, so wait until you see clear signs.
Here's a mistake I made that you should avoid: repotting a Calathea in winter. I did this once because I thought the plant was root-bound, and it dropped half its leaves within two weeks. Spring is the only safe time for repotting Calathea, and early summer works too. Maranta is more flexible — I've repotted in fall without issues, but spring is still best. When you do repot, go up only one pot size. Jumping from a 4-inch pot to an 8-inch pot will drown the roots because the extra soil holds too much moisture. I use terracotta pots for Maranta and glazed ceramic pots for Calathea. Terracotta wicks away excess moisture, which helps Maranta's spreading roots. Glazed ceramic retains moisture longer, which Calathea's deeper roots appreciate. This small detail has made a big difference in how often I need to water and how healthy the leaves stay.
Final Thoughts From Someone Who's Been There
The Joy of Watching Them Grow
You know what keeps me coming back to these plants? The daily surprises. Every morning, I check my Maranta and see how the leaves have unfolded from their nighttime prayer position. Every week, I spot a new leaf unfurling on my Calathea, with colors so vivid they look fake. They're not just plants — they're living art that changes every day.
I've had friends tell me they don't have a green thumb, and I always say the same thing: neither did I. I killed succulents, overwatered snake plants, and let ferns turn to dust. The difference with Maranta and Calathea is that they communicate clearly. When they're happy, you see it in the glossy leaves and steady growth. When they're unhappy, they tell you with brown edges, curling leaves, or stopped movement. Learn to read those signals, and you'll build a relationship with your plant. I keep a small notebook where I jot down changes — "moved to east window, leaves uncurled in three days" or "added pebble tray, stopped getting brown tips." It sounds nerdy, but it's helped me understand what each plant wants. And that understanding is what turns a casual plant owner into someone who can keep a Calathea alive for years.
Why I Still Recommend Both
After all the warnings about Calathea being difficult, you might wonder why I keep them. Here's the honest answer: the payoff is worth the effort. A thriving Calathea orbifolia with leaves the size of dinner plates is one of the most stunning things you can grow indoors. A Maranta with cascading stems and red-veined leaves folding at night is a conversation starter every evening. They bring life to a room in a way that plastic decor never can.
If you're on the fence, start with a Maranta leuconeura. It's cheap, widely available, and forgiving enough to survive your learning curve. Keep it alive for six months, then try a Calathea lancifolia — it's one of the easier Calatheas. I've lost more plants than I can count, and every loss taught me something. That's the secret nobody tells you: you will fail, and that's okay. The plants that survive become your teachers, and the ones that don't become lessons. I have a graveyard of crispy Calatheas in my memory, and I'm a better plant parent because of them. So go ahead, pick one up, and give it a try. You might surprise yourself.

FAQs
Q: Are Calathea and Maranta the same plant, or is that just a common myth?
A: No, they are not the same plant — even though the plant industry often labels them interchangeably, which drives me crazy. Both belong to the Marantaceae family, but Maranta is the true "prayer plant" that folds its leaves upright at night, while Calathea is a different genus that lifts its leaves more subtly. I've seen this confusion firsthand at nurseries where tags say "prayer plant" for Calathea, and it leads to so many misunderstandings. The leaf shape is your first clue: Maranta leaves are almost always oval, about 3 to 5 inches long, with bold vein patterns that look like fishbones. Calathea leaves come in round, oval, and lance shapes, often larger with painted-on stripes or spots. If you're shopping, always check the scientific name on the tag — Maranta leuconeura means you're getting a true prayer plant, while Calathea orbifolia or Calathea lancifolia means something different. I learned this lesson after buying a "prayer plant" that never folded its leaves, thinking I was failing as a plant parent. Turns out, it was a Calathea all along. So trust the botanical name, not the common name.
Q: How can you tell Maranta and Calathea apart just by looking at the leaves?
A: Look at the leaf shape and the pattern — that's your quickest clue, and it rarely fails. Maranta leaves are consistently oval and broad, about 3 to 5 inches long, with distinct veins that create a glowing, fishbone or rib pattern. The red-veined prayer plant, Maranta leuconeura, is a classic example with bright red veins running down the center and out to the edges. Calathea leaves are more varied — you'll see round leaves like Calathea orbifolia, long wavy-edged leaves like the rattlesnake plant (Calathea lancifolia), and even lance-shaped ones. The patterns on Calathea look hand-painted with fine brush strokes, featuring stripes, spots, or feathered edges. I always tell plant owners to check the veins first: if they look like they're glowing or form a clear rib pattern, it's Maranta. If the pattern looks like it was painted on the surface, it's Calathea. The growth habit also helps — Maranta trails and spreads, while Calathea stands upright. If your plant is spilling over the pot's edge, it's almost certainly Maranta. If it's reaching for the ceiling, you're looking at a Calathea.
Q: Why is Calathea so much harder to care for than Maranta, and what mistakes should I avoid?
A: Calathea is genuinely the diva of the two — I've killed at least three myself, and I've been doing this for years. The biggest mistake people make is using tap water straight from the faucet. Calathea is notoriously sensitive to chlorine and fluoride, and you'll see brown leaf tips within a week if you don't filter it. I now use distilled water exclusively for my Calathea, and the difference is night and day. Maranta is more forgiving — it tolerates tap water better, though it still prefers filtered or distilled if you can manage it. Another common error is overwatering. Both plants like moist soil, but they hate sitting in water. Stick your finger about an inch deep; if it feels dry, water. If it's still damp, wait. Calathea is more prone to root rot, so err on the side of underwatering if you're unsure. Humidity is also critical — Calathea suffers faster in dry air, with leaves curling and browning at the edges. I keep a hygrometer near my plants now, and when humidity drops below 50%, both start complaining. Grouping plants together or using a pebble tray helps. Start with Maranta first if you're new to these plants — it's much more forgiving, and you'll build confidence before tackling a Calathea.
Q: Can you propagate Maranta and Calathea the same way, or do they need different methods?
A: No, they require completely different propagation approaches, and mixing them up is a common mistake. Maranta is easy to propagate — just take a stem cutting with at least two nodes and place it in water. I've done this dozens of times with a 90% success rate. Change the water every few days, and you'll see roots in two to three weeks. Once the roots are about two inches long, pot it in a small container with well-draining soil. Calathea is harder because it grows from rhizomes, so you need to divide the root ball. Wait until the plant is big enough to have multiple stems, then gently separate the root ball into sections with at least two stems each. The success rate for Calathea division is lower — about 60% for me — and only if I'm careful not to damage the roots. After dividing, keep the new plants in a humid environment for about a week, like a clear plastic bag with a few holes. I've lost divisions to low humidity, so don't skip this step. If you're new to propagation, start with Maranta. It's forgiving, fast, and you'll feel like a plant pro when those roots appear. Calathea propagation requires more patience, but it's rewarding when you see new growth emerge from a successful division.
Q: What should I do if my Maranta or Calathea stops moving at night, and is that a sign of trouble?
A: Yes, if your Maranta stops folding at night, something is off — and it's usually a light or moisture issue. I once moved a Maranta near a bright window, thinking it would love the extra light, and within a week the leaves stopped their nightly ritual. I moved it back to a shadier spot, and within three days it was back to its routine. Maranta is sensitive to direct sun, which damages the leaves and disrupts the nyctinasty cycle. Calathea also responds to light stress, but it shows up as leaf curling or browning edges instead of stopping movement. Check these three things first: light exposure, soil moisture, and humidity levels. If the plant is getting too much direct light, move it to a spot with bright, indirect light. If the soil is too dry or too wet, adjust your watering schedule. I keep a hygrometer now because guessing never works — when humidity drops below 50%, both plants start struggling. Temperature is another factor: Maranta can handle down to about 60°F, but Calathea is pickier and will show distress below that. If your plant has stopped moving, don't panic. Make one change at a time and wait a week before adjusting anything else. Sudden changes stress them more than imperfect conditions, so be patient. With the right adjustments, your plant should return to its nightly routine within a week or two.
